The short version... I met Lee Goland in 1996 at The Artists' Cafe in San Francisco (it's no longer in business). We had some things in common: we were both atheists, both Jews, and we both wrote sarcastic folk songs. We also had a lot of differences: Lee was a sometimes-homeless gay, vegetarian, radical political activist. Some time around 2000 he told me he was diagnosed with AIDS. He didn't seek treatment. Lee was part of a militant, fringe group called ACT UP San Francisco whose two main issues seem to be the legalization of marijuana (good) and the promotion of AIDS denialism (bad, bad, bad). Anyway, Lee disappeared at some point and it's been many years since anyone has heard from him. It is widely assumed that he died from AIDS. I created this site because someone had to. I didn't agree with Lee about a lot of things (my god, who did?), but he was an extraordinary artist and a good friend of mine. We shouldn't forget him. |
